OhioHealth on Ohio-heavy list of top health systems - Business First of Columbus

Ohio dominated an annual list of the top 10 health systems in the nation, a roster that placed Columbus’ largest hospital operator among its ranks.

The Thomson Reuters ranking, released Monday, identified four Ohio-based health systems and included the eight-hospital OhioHealth Corp. of Columbus, which runs Grant and Riverside Methodist hospitals. Also making the cut were Catholic Healthcare Partners in Cincinnati, Kettering Health Network in Dayton and University Hospitals Health System of Cleveland.

The same four Ohio hospitals made the ranking last year, when the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati also was named.

Thomson Reuters compiles its list by analyzing Medicaid and Medicare data from more than 250 health systems with two or more short-term, general, non-federal hospitals. Compared against the worst-performing systems in the nation, those near the top of the list reported 16 percent lower mortality, 18 percent fewer medical complications and 16 percent fewer patient safety incidents.

Other hospitals to make the top 10 list this year were:

• Banner Health of Phoenix;

• Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis;

• Mayo Foundation of Rochester, Minn.;

• Scripps Health in San Diego; and

• Spectrum Health of Grand Rapids, Mich.

Ohio State University Medical Center has appeared in the organization’s list of the top 100 hospitals, but Thomson Reuters hasn’t ranked the hospital as a system, citing a clerical difference in how it reports to Medicare.
