BOUTON IS BATTELLE’S INVENTOR OF THE YEAR

Scientist in Health and Life Science Global Business a Master of Robotics, Sensors

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Chad Bouton, a Senior Research Scientist in Medical Device Solutions, was named Battelle’s Inventor of the Year at the organization’s annual Recognition and Rewards Banquet April 30 in Columbus. Bouton works in Battelle’s Health and Life Sciences Global Business. “Chad’s innovations and inventions have directly led to multiple medical devices being placed on the market and in use today,” said Barbara Kunz, President of Battelle’s Health and Life Sciences Global Business. “The quality of life of patients worldwide has been improved because of Chad’s efforts.”

Bouton’s varied background in innovation includes expertise in control systems, automated and robotics systems, sensor development, and signal processing of electrophysiological parameters including neurological types. He also has extensive experience in electrical and electromechanical device design methodologies and techniques and holds 15 patents with six others pending. He also has been the recipient of two R&D Top 100 awards, a Battelle Outstanding Technical Achievement Awards and has published nine works in scholarly journals.

A staff member for longer than 13 years, Bouton has been the primary innovator, inventor and/or principal investigator for dozens of medical device projects. His work has enabled paraplegics to control wheelchairs with their thoughts and provided surgeons with tools to enable minimally invasive surgical procedures.

Bouton developed new algorithms and gamma ray detection circuitry for cancer detection systems in the late 1990s to aid surgeons in more efficiently and effectively pinpointing cancerous tissue intra-operatively. The product was awarded a R&D 100 Award in 2000. In 2004, Bouton was awarded the Battelle Technical Achievement Award for his innovation and development of a new medical sensing technology that utilized weak microwaves to detect fluids of interest in the human body.
