Monday morning muses - March 31 2008 - In praise of the underdog
Last night as thoughts about getting ready for Monday morning was creeping
into my brain I turned on the TV to catch the last few minutes of the Elite eight matchup between the University of Kansas ( http://www.ku.edu/) and little Davidson College (www.davidson.edu).
In the ended Kansas ended up squeaking a victory out (59-57) but Davidson made it exciting until the end. I'm the first to admit that I was hoping that the last three point shot would've gone in. There is something about a Cinderella story that makes me want to cheer...to heck with what's rational I want the underdog to win it...
I'd like to point out that one of the things that makes March madness great is that it allows the best teams in the land (regardless of size to compete or geography) to compete and that on any given night any team can knock another one out and win. In today's wired web 2.0 world what that translates into is the (if you're a Kansas) there is a Davidson just waiting to knock you off your perch and sometimes they will win (just ask Georgetown). However ,in our web 2.0 world that challenger can come, not just from the US, but from anywhere in the world. Who do you think you're competing against?
The flipside is that I believe that , in Columbus, there are companies, that can compete successfully on a global stage, if only they were given a little help to access that stage. So here's where reader participation comes in - who are the Davidson College's in Columbus? .
Have a great week,
Ben
P.S. Here's an example of what a little attention can do for a underdog - #1 google search ranking
