State officials have signed off on nearly $3 million in grant funding headed to two Columbus technology centers aimed at helping early-stage companies.
The Ohio Controlling Board on Monday approved a $1.6 million grant for the Edison Welding Institute and a $1.2 million grant for BioOhio as part of the Thomas Edison Program, which promotes high-tech development in Ohio. The grants are among 13 Edison Program awards approved statewide totaling $9.7 million.
The Edison Welding Institute, located on Ohio State University’s campus, is a nonprofit engineering and technology organization focused on research and development of materials-joining and welding. State officials said the funding will be used to assist its clients with a number of development steps, including prototyping and design analysis.
BioOhio, formerly Omeris, plans to use its Edison grant to help with product development, network and marketing.
Both nonprofits also have put up matching funds, the state said.
The Controlling Board on Monday also gave final approval to a $3.38 million grant headed to the Beightler Armory in Columbus to upgrade the facility’s more than 40-year-old heating and cooling system.
