CallCopy Blog » CallCopy wins 2010 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the year award

Last Friday Ray Bohac won the E&Y entrepreneur of the year award - this letter is from his blog - his graciousness and thankfulness are but a few of the reasons we're thrilled to have Ray in the Columbus entrepreneur community

CallCopy Blog » CallCopy wins 2010 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the year award

Yesterday evening I had the honor of accepting the award for the 2010 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year. The award is considered by many as the equivalent of the Grammy’s for entrepreneurship.

This is a big win for CallCopy. Although I am named on the award, this is truly an award for the company, its owners, and of course our family of employees. It is a culmination of the hard work, dedication, and passion that we all have to each other and to our customers.

It seems like it was just yesterday that our founding team Jeff Canter, Rick Daley, Patrick Hall, Mark Studer, Tarne Tassniyom and I joined forces to promote and grow what at that time was just a software application called CallCopy. Out of sacrifice we, and our families, dedicated valuable time and sweat equity to create a company that at its core is about having an excellent work environment, passion for our customers and each other, and constant innovation.

Without our employees this would not have been possible. We are blessed to have a team who strives towards those same core values each and every day; a team that constantly goes above and beyond without expecting or asking for gratitude, and a team that won’t allow internal barriers inhibiting the delivery of service based on the highest standards in our industry.

CallCopy has grown significantly over the past several years. Financially we have doubled year over year in revenues while remaining profitable and only taking on a small amount of debt in regards to the build out of our new facility. Although this is an indicator of strength, the true strength comes from within. It is the continued passion and energy that is still being delivered from our founding team and our employees that is the true reason for our strength and this award.

As we celebrate this award/nomination we must think about those who this ceremony truly celebrates.

OSU, Neoprobe up for 3rd Frontier grants - Business First of Columbus

OSU, Neoprobe up for 3rd Frontier grants - Business First of Columbus

Central Ohio’s largest university and its smallest public company are poised to benefit from nearly $9 million in Third Frontier funding awarded this week.

The Ohio Third Frontier Commission has recommended about $8.9 million be channeled to several projects tied to commercializing medical imaging-related projects. The awards, which require approval from the state Controlling Board, are expected to leverage nearly $16 million of additional investment.

Ohio State University was awarded $1.7 million for an effort to improve the quality and resolution of ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging.

The university is part of two other MRI-related projects that received funding this week:

• An effort to improve MRI quality for pediatric patients, led by GE Healthcare Technologies of Aurora, was awarded $1 million and includes OSU and Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center as partners.

EXCMR Ltd. of Columbus clinched $1.4 million from Third Frontier for a stress-induced MRI project that includes OSU researchers.

Dublin medical device developer Neoprobe Corp. (OTC BB:NEOP) was awarded $1 million toward continued clinical studies of its Lymphoseek drug, used to detect cancer in lymph nodes. The company, which is moving the product closer to the market, listed Dublin-based Cardinal Health Inc. (NYSE:CAH) as a partner in its research efforts.

Seth's Blog: You're already self employed

When are you going to start acting like it?

The idea that you are a faceless cog in a benevolent system that cares about you and can't tell particularly whether you are worth a day's pay or not, is, like it or not, over.

In the long run, we're all dead. In the medium-long run, though, we're all self-employed. In the medium-long run, the decisions and actions we take each day determine what we'll be doing next.

And yet, it's so easy to revert to, "I just work here."

Dublin’s Cardiox awarded 3rd Frontier grant - Business First of Columbus

Dublin’s Cardiox awarded 3rd Frontier grant - Business First of Columbus

Nearly $2 million in funding through Ohio’s Third Frontier program could help a Dublin biomedical company bring technology closer to the market and establish a Columbus office for an out-of-state firm.

The Third Frontier Commission on Wednesday recommended about $4.9 million in funding for several projects statewide through its biomedical program. The awards, which require final approval from the state Controlling Board, are expected to leverage about $11 million in investments in the state.

The two projects that could benefit Central Ohio are:

• A $986,373 award for Cardiox Corp. of Dublin. The company is working on a project to finalize design and testing protocol for a device that detects shunts, or holes in the heart. Detecting the congenital defect, which in some cases can increase the risk of stroke, requires an expensive and elaborate procedure, but the state said Cardiox’s technology is a low-cost alternative.

• A $1 million award to Broomfield, Colo.-based Lanx Inc., which is looking to form a Columbus-based Ohio division to move toward commercializing a device that measures range of lumbar motion in patients with back injuries. The state says the technology could lead to more effective treatment. Among Lanx’s several collaborators is Ohio State University.

The Third Frontier program has created or commercialized more than 600 companies and attracted nearly $5 billion in private investment since its launch in 2002.

Ohio Game Incubator Starting Up - lnvite to join google group to learn more

HI all:

Alex Jonas and Devin Moore (and friends) have joined together in starting the Ohio Game Incubator.

The Ohio Game Incubator will be a regular business incubator with a specific target of the gaming industry in all its forms including computer games, mobile games, board games, etc. and all the ancillary products and services that go with them.

Our mission is to create and nourish a game creation environment in Ohio.

We are looking at other programs like TechColumbus, TechStart, Ohio Edison Program, Sweden's game incubator program and Victoria, Australia's game incubator program and similar programs both regular business startup and game specific, with the idea of combining the best things about them and having one Ohio umbrella group forming a game industry in Ohio.

We want Game Money to flow TO Ohio instead of OUT OF Ohio, and we want to WORK TOGETHER to achieve this.

We welcome all OHIO-based Game Designers, Game Developers, Game Programmers, Game Creators, Game Companies and associated industries, Game Entrepreneurs, Game Brainstormers, and Game Anything Else People with Open Arms and Open Minds, so that nobody ever has to leave Ohio to pursue their dream or opportunities.

We seek to connect anybody and everybody in the Gaming Field together with other Ohioans so the Ohio is the best place to start and maintain a game company.

*** THE COMPANY

Ohio Game Incubator is a Columbus-based Computer Game Incubator. We provide all the resources and support that any Ohioan needs to start, develop and maintain a Computer Game company in Ohio. There are many Ohioans interested in starting or being part of a Computer Game Company and we seek to provide the proper positive environment within Ohio state so the they do not have to go outside Ohio to pursue and fulfill their dreams and opportunities. Think One-Stop place for all Game business needs in Ohio instead of California, with Ohioans working together to compete with the rest of the world instead of everybody working on their own. The more Ohioans can collaborate, the better advantage we will have.

The Game Incubator itself will be a couple sister companies,
1. a Not-For-Profit entity so we can gather resources and opportunities only available to NPOs , We will also be able to ask for grants, Government help and freebies through this branch and assist people whether their idea has a commercial value or not.
2. Many small For-Profit ventures under one umbrella portfolio company. This is so we can actively seek business deals, venture capital, etc and make money developing game ideas.
3. Flexible entities designed for specific opportunities.

We can have the best of both worlds and take advantage of all the resources and opportunities available to each sector.

Buckeye Game Incubators operates in Columbus-Ohio with the ability to provide services throughout Ohio, targeting any individual, group or company in the Game Creation and Development field. Future plans would have offices/groups in other major Ohio cities.
There are 700 USA Game Development companies with up to 18000 companies supporting them. There are more than 39,700 USA professionals developing or publishing games with 46% in California. We would like Ohio to be the #2 player.

I have another 6 pages of info on this but I think that you get the idea by now. We are working now on setting up things and we ask that you please join our Google Group so that we can start organizing all the interested parties and determining what all we can do. We can also start providing more info to you easier.

Please join our google group at:

University Collaborators in Third Frontier Projects Find Many Opportunities to Work Together

University Collaborators in Third Frontier Projects Find Many Opportunities to Work Together

The Ohio State University (OSU) and the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) have proven to be excellent performers over the last 5 to 6 years in several Ohio Third Frontier grants, including:
Collectively, just these four Third Frontier investments have created over 450 new jobs with average salaries above $57,000, plus over $220 million in new product sales. Further, these four collaborations have attracted over $200 M in Federal and industry funds to the state and attracted or started 10 new companies. In addition, through collaboration with IDCAST, one Dayton company has grown its federal government portion of sensor revenue from $3 M a year to over $50 M a year in four years. Such success has generated so much media excitement that now the WCIs (CMPND and IDCAST) and the Third Frontier Research Commercialization Program (RCP) are considered models for University-Industry-Federal Lab collaborations. For Ohio, such statistics reflect major accomplishments for the universities and for the State!
In the fourth quarter of 2009, Cleveland-based Parker Hannifin visited OSU and expressed interest in having more in-depth, technical discussions on five or six topics, including high-performance and more abrasive-resistant coatings. Through fast action by Dr. Sharell Mikesell (OSU – Industry Liaison Office) and by Dr. Alex Morgan at UDRI, the required confidential disclosure agreement (CDA) was put place in less than 48 hours. This allowed for a full, in-depth discussion among OSU and URDI participants with the Parker Hannifin researchers.
The OSU-URDI-Parker Hannifin meeting had several success points:
  1. This joint approach was a major time saver because it brought together research experts from multiple universities in one place; the collaboration created one-stop shopping coordinated in the universities.
  2. During the meeting, new synergies were discovered between the two universities that otherwise might never have been found and thus, might never have been made available to the State.
  3. The ability to build on each other’s strengths and thereby formulate more robust projects has helped make Ohio companies even stronger as global competitors.
Parker Hannifin's view of the meeting is summarized by Dawn Zhu, Sr. Project Engineer: ”What impressed us the most are the large network and joint effort OSU is able to provide. We were directed quickly to the right resources based on our particular interest, not only among OSU itself, but also among several major collaborating universities and institutes throughout Ohio. OSU functioned as a central hub of a comprehensive information network. To us, this is a huge time-saver.”

Big Power, Small Package - Platform Lab

Platform Lab blog

Bill gates once said, "If you give people tools, and they use their natural ability and their curiosity, they will develop things in a way that will surprise you very much beyond what you might have expected." In 1946, the world was introduced to the "Giant Brain", or ENIAC, the world's first computer. 28 years later, the first desktop computer was introduced by Micro Instrumentation Telemetry Systems, they called it Altair. Two years later, Apple I was created by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, proving that computing could become personal.

The shift from the idea of a computer taking up an entire room to just a spot on a desk was radical at the time, but in 1981, IBM introduced the IBM PC, proving that personal computing was more than just a fad.

Skip ahead to 2010, where another shift is happening. While not as radical as a shift from a super-computer to a desktop computer, thin client computing is starting to become more and more popular among businesses and corporations. Thin clients can benefit companies in various ways, including reducing cost, power consumption and increased security.

A leader in thin-client technology, Wyse Technology offers both hardware and software for thin client solutions. Companies such as Sears, Petsmart, Verizon and Citi are using Wyse thin clients. Both public and private organizations are starting to integrate thin clients into their businesses every day. Wyse describes their technology as Cloud Client Computing. "Cloud Client Computing is the ultimate client computing solution for our time. It replaces the outdated computing model of the unsecure, unreliable, un-green and expensive PC. It delivers the most optimized security, reliability, total cost of ownership, and user experience with the lowest energy usage. It simply connects all the dots: Thin and zero client computing, unified communications, desktop virtualization and the web for users to reach the clouds – in a private, public, government or hybrid cloud."

Is your firm thinking about adopting thin client technology, or are you curious to see how it works? Wyse has donated several thin clients to Platform Lab for testing and demonstration purposes. We are very excited to have these demo units available to our client base as we ramp up our newest offering, virtual desktop infrastructure.

To learn more about Wyse, please visit their website or contact their sales department.

Fun Wednesday fact - Columbus #2 on "America's Manliest City Ratings"

Charlotte Takes Over As 'America's Manliest City' While Portland Falls to Last -- HACKETTSTOWN, N.J., June 22 /PRNewswire/ --

Charlotte Takes Over As 'America's Manliest City' While Portland Falls to Last

Second Annual 'America's Manliest Cities' Rankings Includes New Criteria, Developed in Partnership between COMBOS(R) Snacks and Research Expert Bert Sperling

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J., June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Mars Chocolate North America announced today the release of the second annual COMBOS® "America's Manliest Cities" study – crowning Charlotte, N.C. with this year's top spot of manliness while last year's top city, Nashville, Tenn., dropped to fourth in the rankings. Chicago had the biggest move in the rankings, going from 46th in 2009 to seventh this year. The study is commissioned by COMBOS® Brand in partnership with Bert Sperling, the research expert behind the popular "Best Places to Live" studies.

The COMBOS® "America's Manliest Cities" study ranks 50 major metropolitan areas, using manly criteria like the number of home improvement stores, steak houses, pickup trucks and motorcycles per capita. "We're excited to release the second installment of the COMBOS® 'America's Manliest Cities' rankings," said Craig Hall, general manager, Mars Chocolate North America. "Charlotte is NASCAR country so we're not surprised that they've taken over the top spot. After all, COMBOS® has been the 'Official Cheese-Filled Snack of NASCAR' since 2002."

Several cities made big jumps up the rankings this year – Chicago, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia all broke the top 10 after being in the lower half of last year's rankings. In addition to cities improving or declining in returning categories, the change in rankings can also be attributed to a new category this year – manly occupations (fire fighters, police officers, construction workers and EMT personnel).

The manly occupations category was added this year to recognize the hard-working guys that make so many American cities great places to live.

Supporting the theme of manliness, COMBOS® also recently launched its Zone Sweet Home sweepstakes at www.COMBOS.com – an opportunity for guys to win an ultimate Home Theater Zone, Tailgating Zone or Gaming Zone, each worth up to $25,000.

Manly Study Highlights

  • Charlotte, N.C. now has chief bragging rights on manliness thanks to its top 10 rankings in the sports, manly lifestyle, manly retail stores, manly occupations and salty snack sales categories.
  • Chi-town natives have another reason to applaud local police officers and firefighters. Chicago moved up 39 spots in the rankings to No. 7 overall, partly thanks to a strong ranking (No. 3) in the manly occupations category.
  • Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, Calif., Oakland, Calif. and Portland, Ore. failed to pull themselves out of the basement of manliness as they each remained in the bottom 10 spots of the rankings for a second consecutive year.
  • Tennessee men embrace a manly lifestyle as Memphis and Nashville finished first and second in the "manly lifestyle" category that tracks the number of pickup trucks and motorcycles registered in the city, sports TV viewing habits, fishing and home improvement.
  • Long known as a city for diehard sports fans, Boston backed up that claim by taking the No.1 spot in the sports category thanks not only to the number of professional sports teams, but the quality of professional sports in the city.
  • The men of Oklahoma City still know how to snack with gusto. For the second year in a row, their city owns the highest purchase rate of salty snacks, such as COMBOS®.

The Manly Methodology*

The rankings were determined using 50 of the largest metropolitan areas as defined by the United States Census Bureau, which includes a central city and the surrounding county (or counties). Each metro area received a manliness rating between 0 and 100 based on how well it performed in each of the study's manly categories. All data was adjusted by the current population of the cities to arrive at "per capita" figures, providing an accurate comparison between cities of varying sizes.
